NQF LEVEL: 04 (3 credits)
DESCRIPTION: Learners accredited with this unit standard, namely handling hazardous chemical substances (hazmat) will, on completion of the training course, be able to monitor, advise and report on the scope and understanding of the specified requirements regarding hazardous substances in the workplace, demonstrate knowledge pertaining to the application of methods in preventing exposure to hazmat and demonstrate knowledge of the classification, physical state, health effects and disposal methods of hazmat in the workplace.
DURATION: Full Training (Novice): 1 Day
COURSE CONTENT: Know the hazardous chemical substance
    In this module, learners will learn the classifications of     hazardous chemical substances, state of matter     classification, physicochemical classification and health     effects classification.
Entry routes of hazardous chemical substances
    This module takes learners through inhalation,     ingestion, skin absorption, skin abrasions and wounds,     the effects of hazardous chemical substances and     toxicology.
Identification of hazardous chemical substances
    We show learners the symbols, labelling and Material
    Safety Data Sheet of hazardous chemical substances.
Control of exposure to HCS
    Learners are familiarised with the identification,     evaluation and control of exposure to hazardous     chemical substance.
Legislation
    This module deals with the duties and responsibilities of     employers, the duty to inform, duty of employees, duty     to not interfere with, damage or misuse things, the     prohibition of certain deductions, how to report to an     inspector regarding certain incidents, forbidden     victimization, acts or omissions by employees or     mandatories, penalties, hazardous chemical substances     regulations and disposal of HCS.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: The company and learners must meet the conditions of the training requirements before theory training can be given, as well as the following:

Communication at NQF Level 1 or equivalent and
mathematical literacy at NQF Level 1 or equivalent,
assumed to be in place.
