Course content

Spill kit related legislation

In this module we go over the various acts and regulations pertaining to the use of spill kits and to environmental management and responsibility.

How To Read a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS)

This module takes learners through how the information on MSDSs is interpreted, and stresses the importance of knowing the MSDS in order to respond properly using the spill kit.

Identification of hazardous chemical substances

We show learners the symbols, labelling and Material Safety Data Sheet of hazardous chemical substances.

Types of spill kits

Learners are familiarised with the oil spill kit, chemical spill kit and the universal spill kit, their contents and their uses.

The 7-step spill kit procedure

We show the learners the seven steps needed to clean up a spill in an emergency situation, with an emphasis on efficiency and safety.

Spill kit maintenance

We explain the importance of training personnel in spill kit maintenance and making spill kit a part of your routine. We take learners through the quarterly spill kit contents check to ensure all spill kit parts and supplies are in working order, to replace old or worn components, to make sure spill kits are strategically placed, and to check for rubbish or other foreign objects.

Spill report form example

We provide learners with an example of a spill report form, which is a vital piece of documentation when dealing with a spill.

Assessment methods

We conduct a formative theoretical assessment at the beginning of the course to gauge the learner’s initial understanding (novices only). At the end of the training, a summative theoretical and practical application assessment is conducted, to find if the learner is competent; if not, additional developmental areas are identified and suggested.
